It was the sound that was unbearable.
A whisper of rough skin dragging on stone, followed by the muted clop of hooves and chime of bells.
Once you were marked, the sound was there. No matter the distance or how loud your surroundings.
Once the mark had been set, you had one hundred days.
Others had tried to escape, their accounts easy enough to find. Feverish scribbles put down in books, scrolls and even ancient stones.
They all said the same:
Gloomfoot was stalking closer and it wanted you to know. It enjoyed your mad scramble for deliverance.
Months would be spent pouring over texts, but no way out was to be found.
No sleep, no respite and no way to spend the remainder of your days living well.
Always that inexorable sound.
Madness was creeping ever closer. Would you spare yourself further agony and give the beast the satisfaction of claiming your soul solely with the fear it invoked?
